A series of specifically orientated living pods make the most of sweeping rural views while at the same time contributing to an energy efficient home.

Surrounded by acres of open grass paddock, this modern take on a traditional Australian homestead has been built from a series of linked pods, with specifically orientated glazing to make the most of views and energy-saving principles.

Protected from prevailing winds, and with glazing in all the right places, this is a flexible, well-planned home where the owners can potentially live off the grid. Named “Ramsar Fields”, the property pays homage to the nearby Gippsland Lakes, which is one of Australia’s 66 designated “Ramsar” sites – protected wetlands important for conserving biological diversity.

Passive design principles directed the location of windows, doors and coverings which will shade the home from summer sun, capitalise on solar warming in winter, and enable passive cooling by taking advantage of seasonal breezes. Throughout the property windows and doors were selected from Carinya’s Classic and Select ranges. Featuring commercial-level credentials, both ranges are designed to deliver high performing products to the residential market.

All three outdoor terraces are accessed through Carinya Classic Sliding Doors, while Select Hinged 125mm Doors have been used for the other exterior access points. Invisi-Gard security screens, which accompany the doors, will assist passive cooling in summer by enabling cross-building airflow. Along with their high visibility and security credentials, Invisi-Gard screens are also rated to Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) of BAL40, making them appropriate for bushfire prone regions.

Slim vertical Carinya Classic Awning windows punctuate the wooden feature facades while Classic Sliding windows have been used in both vertical and horizontal sliding motions for utility and bedroom areas. For security, lockable chain winders have been installed on the awning windows, attached to the wide sash which is a feature of the Classic range.

With its barn-like appearance created by the red brick walls, wood facades and corrugated metal gable roofs, the window and door frames were finished in Dulux Black Matt to provide a visually appealing contrast.
